Spending a lot of money while traveling is easy and more often than not, people cannot imagine the possibility of enjoying a vacation without saving up for it far in advance. To give you another perspective on the cost of traveling, we have come up with a few suggestions for an inexpensive vacation in Amsterdam.
Take a free walking tour
While one can easily explore the city on foot individually, guided tours can still give a little more insight and information on the things you come across. In about three hours, the New Amsterdam Walking Tour will take you to the most important spots in Amsterdam, from the Royal Palace to the Red Light District to the Anne Frank House and other tourist attractions. The tour starts daily at 11.15 a.m. and 1.15 p.m. at the national monument on Dam Square.
Westerkerk
In the Jordaan district of Amsterdam you can find the Renaissance style Westerkerk, not too far away from the Anne Frank House. It is believed that Anne Frank could hear the bells of this same church while she was writing her diary in her hiding place. Not only is this church a beautiful piece of architecture, it is also the resting place of the painter Rembrandt van Rijn.
Civic Guard Gallery
By the gate of the Amsterdam Historical Museum, you can have a free look at some 17th century paintings from the Museum’s collection. Just keep an eye on the walls of the walkway and enjoy the breathtaking masterpieces.
Vondelpark
A very spacious, beautiful park for nature lovers and those who would like to take a rest away from the noise of urban Amsterdam. If you find yourself in Amsterdam between May and August, you may also enjoy the yearly Vondelpark summer festival, famous for its open air shows.
Free Concerts
Why not listen to some classical music during lunch? If that idea appeals to you, the best place to visit is the Concertgebouw. Musicians rehearse for their upcoming concerts in the famous music hall. These rehearsals take place from mid-September until June every Wednesday from 12.30 p.m. to 1 p.m.
Rijksmuseum Garden
While the entrance to the museum requires a fee for anyone above the age of 18, the colorful flowerbeds, fountains and monumental works of the Museum’s garden can be visited for free from 9:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. without any ticket. This could be just the right spot to visit before or after taking a picture with the famous “I amsterdam” letters.
A view from the water
Amsterdam would not be Amsterdam without its canals and waterways. If you want to experience something slightly different from the usual canal boat ride, make your way to the central station and the ferries behind it. The short ride will take you to parts of the city that not many tourists know of.
