Amnesty International Looking for an Intern to Volunteer in Rwanda and Burundi

Amnesty International looking for a voluntary intern to work with the Rwanda and Burundi team for six months, for at least three days a week and preferably five days. The Rwanda and Burundi team is part of the East Africa, the Horn and Great Lakes Regional Office and is responsible for Amnesty International's research and campaigning in both countries. Deadline to apply is July 13th. 

 

Although the voluntary intern’s role will be supervised, s/he will be expected to work independently, use his/her initiative and manage his/her own tasks. Willingness to undertake some routine administrative tasks is crucial.

Projects will be devised by the team in collaboration with the voluntary intern, who will assist the team in fulfilling its strategic objectives, while making the best use of the voluntary intern’s own skills, interests and experience. Please note that a voluntary internship does not directly lead to employment with Amnesty International.

Main responsibilities

  • Human rights monitoring: Monitor newspapers, online outlets and social media, as well as reports from partners on a daily basis.
  • Basic research tasks: With guidance from the team, carry out desk research on specific issues and developments and share findings with the team.
  • Database management: Maintain and update logs on human rights violations and abuses, as well as on individuals at risk.
  • Filing: Assist with filing of electronic and hardcopy materials.
  • Administrative support: Assist with tasks such as mailing, event management, and maintaining contact databases.

Main criteria

  • Interest in and knowledge of the social, political and human rights contexts of Rwanda and Burundi;
  • Background through study, work or other experience in a relevant area, such as human rights, law, international relations, political science or social sciences;
  • Strong computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Fluent written and spoken English and French.
