Foreign students in the USA could be required to reapply for their permission to stay in the country every year after a proposal was made by senior officials at the Department of Homeland Security. This could create additional paperwork and costs for many students from India, China and other nations. The officials stated that this kind of proposition has a purpose to enhance national security by closely monitoring students. This plan is still in the preliminary stages and it could take up to 18 month for its implementation.

Russian government wants to cut 40% of state-funded places in domestic universities

2018 could bring drastic changes to Russian universities because government will try to push the plan to cut 40% of state-funded places in domestic universities. First plans emerged about year ago, but they were postponed. However, the devaluation of the national currency, the ruble and second wave of the financial crisis forced the state to return to these plans. Around 500 scientists could lose their jobs in early 2018, and up to 8300 scientists could lose their jobs by 2020. The programmes known as ”Development of Education and ”Development of Science and Technology” are primary target of the proposed cut.

Students launch fundraising page in order to sue LSE

After the claim that London School of Economics (LSE) breached tenancy contract, a group of postgraduates started a funding page to collect money for the lawsuit. They stated that they suffered from a broken ventilation system, were overrun by rats, and contamined with mould. The goal of these students is to raise £5,000 for legal fees. Under the name Sidney Webb House Group Action, they wrote: ”Many students fell ill. Some were diagnosed with upper respiratory tract infections and one resident underwent an open surgical procedure due to skin infection.”
