Take a short holiday and visit the fourth-largest city in Austria - Salzburg. The city is famous for many reasons, but mainly for its baroque architecture and the house where Mozart was born. Less well known is the Hohensalzburg Fortress, which looms above the city and creates the typical Salzburg panorama with a background of majestic mountains. The city was also the setting for the musical film The Sound of Music, which was based on a true story and won five Academy Awards.
The city has a lot to offer and is worth visiting at any time during the year, but the best time is from the early spring through the summer till autumn. The wintertime offers romantic Christmas markets.
There is no need to climb the steep rock path to visit Hohensalzburg Fortress. Regular access from the city centre is provided by comfortable cableway. The view is spectacular in all directions.
When you get hungry, there will be many great opportunities to eat on the main street, with choices ranging from traditional Austrian cuisine to lovely finger food on Getreidegasse.
