Named one of the UNESCO world heritage sites only in 1996, the city of Salzburg was made famous long before then with the film The Sound of Music in 1965 which was inspired by the true story of the von Trapp family. This fabulous city was relatively less known before then.
The city has spectacular views whichever way you look and and since the last decades attracts tourists from across the world. It’s known for its baroque and medieval architecture and closeness to the Alps. Divided by the Salzach river the old part is on one side and is called Altstadt and the ‘new part’ which is also mostly 19th century is on the other and is named Neustadt meaning New City. Though not entirely common it’s not at all unusual to see the average people of Salzburg going about their day in their traditional costumes.
The birthplace of Mozart the city houses the mozart museum which has retained his musical instruments from his childhood.
With mostly a young population totalling about 150,000 the city is host to a large number of international students for its two public universities and the private ones.

Similar to Vienna which we covered last week the fees at the universities in Salzburg ranges from about 350 Euros to 750 Euros per semester. They cover a wide array of subjects and we would suggest you check up their websites to make sure what meets your requirements and aspirations. Also similar to Vienna depending upon which medium of instruction you choose you would have to know either German or English fluently. In any case, working knowledge of German is quite essential :

It is relevant to note that the University of Salzburg is spread across many buildings in the city. While most are within walking distance it’s good to note that the public transport system of the city is one of the best in the world.
Cost of living : The cost of living index says approximately 970 US$ exclusive of accommodation. In the opinion of the writer a student can live fairly well on 1000 US$ inclusive of shared accommodation.
